Aldrich House, 110 Benevolent Street. Join the Rhode Island Historical Society and Battle of Rhode Island Association as we welcome historian Shirley Green to present on her latest book exploring the lives and legacies of William and Benjamin Frank. Green will share the journey of these two free Black men who joined the integrated Second Rhode Island Regiment in the spring of 1777 to be transferred the following year to the newly formed First Rhode Island Regiment, comprised of Black and Native American soldiers. She will chronicle their experiences and also underscore the distinction between free Blacks in military service and those who had been enslaved, and how they responded in different ways to the harsh realities of war.
