Some of you—and you know who you are—will go to Fidas specifically because of its violent history. For the rest of you with tender hearts, don't let the fact that Fidas was the scene of the shooting of Providence policeman Cornell Young, Jr., in January 2000 keep you away. An additional shooting in September 2002 shouldn't deter you either. The folks at Fidas are just trying to earn a living like everyone else, and visiting during the day is perfectly safe as trouble has traditionally occurred in the wee hours of the morning. That's when the bars close and people for whom the ingestion of alcohol is a career rather than a casual hobby go looking for a place to continue their nocturnal socializing. That sort of unpleasantness should be a thing of the past, in any case, because Fidas withdrew their request for a renewal of their late-night license in December 2004. So go during sane hours and enjoy your coffee milk and weiners in peace.

It was rumored when the nearby Eagle Square Shopping Plaza was being built in the mid-2000s, that the powers behind it tried to pressure the owners of Fidas to change the name of their establishment, thereby erasing any unpleasant associated memories. True or not, the name remains. Stand tall Fidas!

The name of the shop comes from the owner's last name. Although it may seem as if someone left an apostrophe off the sign, the spelling is correct as it appears. The business was established around 1970.

Fidas is open every day, 6am-2am.
