Saw Salty Brine Beach in the news today and wondered if it was named for one of my favorite boyhood memories. Apparently it is. I learned to tell time by how many bells it was on Salty's Shack. A sweet memory of a bygone era of vulgarity-free TV.
Editor's note: On July 11, 2015, a mysterious explosion in the sand near the jetty at Salty Brine State Beach injured a sixty-year-old woman. Scientists from URI eventually concluded that an old copper cable, exposed to salt water, had produced combustible hydrogen gas.
